Endpoint agent: why IT assets should register themselves

11 min read

Install runbook: API key, C:\SAC_FAR_Agent\, scheduled task, log checks, matching serials, and fleet rollout criteria.

What a successful check-in contains

Expect serial/service tag, manufacturer, model, CPU, RAM, disk, MAC, OS, hostname, IP, and logged-in user when available. That payload is what Agent Analysis uses. Finance still owns the Asset Code and capital cost — the agent does not create depreciation policy.

  • Blank serial in FAR = hard to auto-match — fix master data first
  • VM/servers: confirm agent support/scope with IT before promising coverage
  • Privacy: tell employees devices report inventory facts to company FAR

Install runbook (copy into IT Wiki)

1) FAR Admin → Endpoint Agent → Generate API key → Download bundle. 2) On PC, create C:\SAC_FAR_Agent\ and extract EXE + config.json. 3) Run agent once; open far_agent.log; confirm success JSON. 4) Right-click SAC_FAR_Agent_Install.exe → Run as administrator. 5) Confirm scheduled task exists and next run time. 6) In FAR Agent Analysis, verify the device row. 7) Link/match to asset code.

  • Never install from Desktop/Downloads long-term — copy to C:\SAC_FAR_Agent\
  • OneDrive/synced paths: scheduled task fails intermittently
  • After replacing config.json: re-run Installer as admin
  • If task fails: read far_agent.log, fix path/key, reinstall task

Matching agent reports to FAR rows

Primary key: Serial Number. Secondary: hostname if serials were never captured. Create a weekly queue of “Unmatched reports” for IT to fix serial typos in FAR or retire ghost assets. Do not create duplicate FAR assets for every check-in.

  • Target: <5% unmatched after 30 days
  • Duplicate serials in FAR must be cleaned before automation helps
  • Custodian vs last logged-in user differences = transfer investigation

Fleet rollout gates

Pilot 5–10 → 50 → all. Gate: pilot check-in rate, zero critical log errors, finance accepts match quality. Deploy with existing software distribution if available; otherwise staged site visits. Keep the EXE version consistent company-wide.

  • Rollback: uninstall scheduled task; leave FAR assets untouched
  • Support: IT L1 uses log file; L2 is FAR admin key/config
  • Review Agent Analysis in monthly IT-finance meeting
