Manufacturing: plant, machinery and tooling control that ops will use

12 min read

Shop-floor ready FAR: unit = plant, QR on machines/dies, AMC dates, and verification that production will actually run.

Model the plant the way production speaks

Create one Unit per plant/site. Use Location or custom fields for Line / Bay / Shop. Categories: Plant & Machinery, Dies & Moulds, Utilities, Material Handling, etc. Parent–child helps when a line has capitalised components — but start simple if your Excel never had components.

  • Do not dump all plants into one unit “Manufacturing”
  • Dies often move — they need QR and frequent verification
  • Civil/building assets can be HO-verified; machines need floor scans

Label what breaks audits and production

Priority QR list: CNC/critical machines, high-value tooling, generators, compressors, material handling. Print Department or by-code PDFs. Mount labels where oil/heat will not destroy them; metal tag + sticker backup if needed.

  • Pilot one line: label → scan → fix bad codes → then expand
  • Keep a “label reprint” request channel to maintenance
  • Photo on Damaged status during breakdown verification

AMC / warranty — fields ops must update

Enable AMC end date and warranty end date on machinery categories. Maintenance owns the dates; finance owns capitalisation. Dashboard alerts only work if dates are entered after PO/AMC renewal — add this to the PO close checklist.

  • On AMC renewal: update FAR same week as vendor PO
  • Critical spares capitalised? Separate assets or components — decide once
  • Idle assets: filter by location “stores” + last verification age

Shutdown / annual verification tip

Align physical verification with planned maintenance shutdowns when machines are accessible. Create the FAR campaign for that plant unit before shutdown week; finish exception closure within 7 days after restart.
